The complete recycling of mixed plastic is currently impossible, as it would produce poor quality material and require too much energy. For this reason, at the moment, most mixed plastic is thermally enhanced and not recycled. On the other hand, PET bottles – that is most of the plastic bottles that we use on a daily basis – can be recycled and produce excellent quality plastic, used for the production of new packaging and more.
PET recycling significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions (around 139,000 tonnes less) and consumes 50% less energy than what is needed to produce new containers.
